Why more people are choosing a flexitarian diet – and what it means for modern snacking

Over the past decade, the way people eat has seen a massive shift. Instead of committing to traditional vegetarian diets or vegan alternatives, many consumers are opting for a more flexible approach that helps them reach their health goals. This fresh, new approach is flexitarianism.

What is a flexitarian diet?

The flexitarian movement focuses on eating plant-based foods while occasionally adding some high-protein meat products to create a more balanced lifestyle and avoid taking synthetic supplements.

According to research from the World Resources Institute, a diet that shifts towards more plant-based products can significantly reduce the environmental impact of food production, while still meeting nutritional needs.

Data gathered from the Food Standards Agency also shows a rising number of consumers in the UK are actively trying to reduce their meat consumption for health and ethical reasons, which has had a huge impact on the healthy snacking industry in recent years.

Both of these factors lean into the new flexitarian trend to support a healthy lifestyle and take care of the planet – both priorities of society today, especially in younger generations.

Why the flexitarian diet trend is growing

The flexitarian diet is growing so quickly as it allows people to be flexible and manage their diets healthily, while working around a busy lifestyle and other commitments. It’s a realistic middle ground between traditional diets and plant-based eating, which allows for the occasional treat reward.

The flexitarian diet encourages:

  • Eating more vegetables, legumes and whole foods
  • Reducing reliance on heavily processed products
  • Choosing plant-based options more often
  • And considering the environmental impact of diet choices

More and more people are committing to this diet every day due to growing health awareness. The link between diet and long-term health is stronger than ever and plant-based foods tend to contain more fibre, vitamins and antioxidants which can lead to better digestion and heart health.

In recent years, the media has also been much more focused on the sustainability of our food sources, and a plant-based diet has been linked, with lower greenhouse gas emissions from production.

The benefits of flexitarian snacking

Flexitarian snacks play a massive role in the day-to-day diet, especially when busy lifestyles make eating patterns less predictable. What people often don’t realise is that snacks are an opportunity to increase vitamin and mineral intake throughout the day.

Plant-based snacking can:

  • Increase your fibre intake, supporting digestion and gut health
  • Pump in essential vitamins and minerals that might be lacking in processed meals
  • Lower your environmental impact compared with a carnivore diet
  • And most of all, satisfy your food cravings without additives or preservatives

One ingredient that fits perfectly into this mix is seaweed.

A firm flexitarian favourite

Seaweed has been a staple in Asian diets for centuries, but it’s now gained a lot of attention in the west due to its superfood status and natural health benefits.

Seaweed is rich in fibre, vitamin B12 and iodine, so it provides all the benefits of a plant-based food source while also sharing some nutrient traits that are normally linked exclusively to meat. It’s also a source of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, meaning you get all these benefits without the resulting bloating or nasty side effects that meat can sometimes bring on.

On top of all this, as a snack, it’s a flavourful choice, with naturally savoury umami taste that makes the perfect alternative to crisps.

Our crispy seaweed sheets come in five fantastic flavours to give anything from the salty taste of the sea to the rich, earthy taste of mushrooms and all packed with vitamins and minerals without all the calories. Learn more in our blog Why our roasted seaweed snacks are so tasty and healthy.

The light texture and convenient portion-sized packaging of the roasted seaweed thins make them enjoyable on their own while you go about your day, or they can be crumbled over salads, rice bowls or noodles to add a little more texture and flavour to your normal lunch.

And to give you peace of mind, the seaweed is responsibly sourced straight from natural seaweed farms off the coast of Korea – no fertilisers, no additives, just pure, natural flavour straight from the ocean.

The future of flexible eating

The flexitarian trend reflects a broader shift in how people think about snacking. Instead of sticking rigidly to the food labels and avoiding animal-based products, they want a more balanced and flexible approach that prioritises their health and the ongoing health of the planet.

It’s a diet that’s less about restriction and more about making smarter and more conscious food choices.
