Going organic is no longer just a trend for the health-conscious – it’s a growing movement toward cleaner eating and more sustainable farming. But with so many labels and marketing claims, how can you tell when food is truly organic and when it’s just pretending? And why does it matter in the first place?
What does ‘organic’ actually mean?
Organic food is grown or produced without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or artificial additives. This approach prioritizes healthy soil and the welfare of animals involved in food production, helping to create a more sustainable food system. By reducing harmful chemicals and promoting natural farming practices, organic food delivers fresher, cleaner produce more directly from farm to table.
Choosing an organic lifestyle means supporting this sustainable system – good for you and good for the planet. It’s a way to enjoy delicious, nutritious food with a clear conscience.
What to look out for in organic products
There’s plenty of clever advertising out there that can make your favourite foods appear organic, even when they’re not.
To be legally labelled as organic, a product must meet strict standards set by recognised certification bodies, such as the Organic Food Federation (OFF), the Soil Association, or OF&G in the UK. This involves following detailed guidelines, keeping thorough records, and undergoing annual inspections. At least 95% of the product’s ingredients must come from certified organic sources.
Everyone in the supply chain handling organic products must also be certified. MORiSH is certified by the OFF (GB-ORG-04), and you’ll find the OFF logo on our organic seaweed snacks. In addition, our products carry the green EU organic mark, as they are also accredited by the Organic Agriculture Europe Certification (KR-ORG-002, Non-EU Agriculture).

When shopping, always check for these certification logos rather than relying solely on the word ‘organic’ on the packaging. These logos are your guarantee that the organic claim is genuine.
Watch out for false organic claims
Not all products that are labelled as organic are created as equal in regard to sustainability and health benefits.
There are a few quick things to look out for before filling your basket:
- Certification mark: there will normally be a mark from one of UK’s organic certification bodies, and/or the EU Organic leaf logo on the packaging for a genuinely organic product. Words don’t mean anything without it.
- Ingredient list: some products try to claim that they’ve been “made with organic ingredients.” While this may be true – the carrots in the cake may have been organic when the bakery purchased them – this doesn’t mean the product itself is organic. There may still be other ingredients in there that contain additives.
- Packaging language: some words could be interpreted as an attempt to appear organic, such as ‘natural’, ‘eco’ or ‘green.’ But this is a clever marketing ploy to attract your attention; it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s organic.
